This would be considered the decisive day during the Battle and the date that is marked on an annual basis as Battle of Britain Day, the Germans recognised that Britain's defences were intact and a seaborne invasion couldn't be risked whilst Fighter Command still remained a credible threat.  The first Luftwaffe raid reached London by midday but had been countered by 22 squadrons of Fighter Command.  A few hours later, three waves of German aircraft targeted London but the first two waves were dispersed before reaching their target.  The final wave reached London but was met by 300 RAF fighters that inflicted the heaviest losses in a month.  Other daylight raids included Portland and the Supermarine Factory at Woolston but neither caused any serious damage.  The RAF had deployed 31 squadrons that demoralised the Luftwaffe crews who had been told that there were virtually no RAF fighters left.  During the night, bombing of London continued until 05.00 the next day with isolated raids on Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire and Scotland.  Total civilian casualties amounted to in excess of 56 killed and 233 injured.  The Germans lost 58 aircraft and 24 damaged.  The image below shows the log book entry for Squadron Leader R.S. The Luftwaffe launched two major raids in the morning focusing on towns in Kent.  In the afternoon smaller raids concentrated on Southampton and the Sussex coast.

The Supermarine Aviation Works at Southampton were attacked by 17 aircraft at 13.50 and again by 3 aircraft at 16.15.  The first raid was led by Martin Lutz of TG210 and achieved a surprise attack with the workforce of Supermarines receiving little warning of the raid. The factory sites weren’t damaged but the bombs straddled the railway embankment and crucially the air raid shelters just as the workers were arriving. A shelter was hit (24 killed, 75 injured) but the works were only slightly damaged, and the effect on production would be small.  Some damage to railway lines and private property, and numerous small fires were caused.  Total casualties in the two raids - 33 dead, 69 seriously injured and 120 slightly. The uninjured workers had to dig out people who had been buried as a result of the bombing and administer first aid as best they could. Female ambulance drivers then ferried the injured to the Royal South Hants Hospital showing great courage as they had to drive through the second raid later in the afternoon. Martin Lutz was awarded the Knight’s Cross for this raid but his luck ran out three days later when he was shot down during a raid on the Bristol Aeroplane Factory.  Image of map below showing the factory site.

During the night, London was heavily attacked by over 100 aircraft with more minor attacks on Liverpool, Wales and South East England.  Images below show damage to Tottenham Court Road, anti-aircraft guns firing and the King and Queen visiting St Thomas’s Hospital.  Civilian casualties amounted to 113 killed and 555 injured.  The Germans lost 11 aircraft and 13 damaged.

Luftwaffe attacks during the day centered on Skinningrove Ironworks, Whitby, Henlow Camp, Coventry, Southampton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Bexhill and shelling of Dover.

The attack on Southampton was of major importance - enemy formations totalled about 100 aircraft and the main objectives was the Supermarine Aviation Works. The factory sirens began just after 4pm and on this occasion, gave the workers ample time to evacuate. The raid was escorted by 60 Me 110 fighters of ZG26 which was protecting the 60 Heinkel 111s of KG55 which attacked in two waves along the North-South axis in block formation.
